Carbiocial – Carbon sequestration, biodiversity and social structures in Southern Amazonia: models and implementation of carbon-optimized land management strategies
The Carbiocial project, in close cooperation with its Brazilian partner project Carbioma, is investigating viable carbon-optimized land management strategies maintaining ecosystem services under changing climate conditions in Southern Amazonia. These are utterly needed to meet the goals set by Brazilian National plans (e.g. ABC-program) and international treaties such as REDD and the Kyoto protocol.
The study region is constituted as a climatological and temporal south-north gradient along the highway BR-163, from the semi-deciduous tropics of Campo Verde (Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State) via the city of Sinop to Novo Progresso (Pará State) the humid tropics of Amazonia. Thereby, ecological aspects (water and soil protection, carbon soil sequestration) are considered with agro-economic aspects (crop yields, farmer’s income), using respective modelling tools (e.g. MP-MAS and MONICA) and are developed into a decision support system (DSS).
